Mitsubishi Diamante Exhaust Valve Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What are the steps required to adjust the Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve clearances on the 1.5L and 1.8L engines on Mitsubishi Diamante?
    A:
Only the 1990-95 Mirage's 1.5L engine and the 1993-95 Mirage's 1.8L engine have valves that require periodic adjustment. First thing is to warm up the engine to operating temperature, then shut it off and remove negative battery cable. All spark plugs will be removed so the engine can be turned manually before the valve cover is removed. Using a crank handle, rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction until the timing belt pulley notches are aligned with the T mark on the lower cover which will bring both cylinder number 1 and 4 pistons to their top dead center (TDC). Move the rocker arms on No. 1 and 4 cylinders to determine which cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke; if the piston in that cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke, both rocker arms will move. Using a feeler gauge, measure valve clearance of No. 1 intake and exhaust and No. 2 intake and exhaust with No. 1 piston at TDC on compression stroke. Subsequently, to bring the No. 4 to TDC on its compression stroke, turn the crankshaft clockwise one complete revolution and check No. 2 exhaust and intake and No. 4 intake and exhaust. The clearance specifications regarding the 1990-92 1.5L engine are as follows: the exhaust valve should be 0.0098 in. The intake valve is 0.059 inches. The exhaust valve should be adjusted to 0.0098 in. for the 1993-95 1.5L engine. The intake valve measures 0.008 inches while the exhaust valve measures 0.25 millimeter. For the 1993-95 1.8L engine 1993-95, the exhaust valve should be 0.012 in. 0.30 mm and the intake valve is 0.008 inches. (0.20mm). In case the valve clearance has gone out of specification, to adjust the valve clearance, loosen the rocker arm locknut and use a feeler gauge while turning the adjusting screw. When at specification, tighten the locknut while ensuring the screw is held solid to prevent turning. The locknut tightening torque is between 9 and 11 foot-pounds. (12-15 Nm) para al motor de 1.5L y 7 ft.lbs. (9 Nm) for the 1.8L engine. Check the clearance again and readjust if need be. Following the valve adjustments, reinstall the valve cover and spark plugs, then connect the negative battery cable.
