Engine mounts are not often the focus of anyone's attention. If your car has a broken mount or it is well-worn, it should be replaced as soon as possible, so that other driveline components do not get damaged or suffer excess wear. To inspect the mounts, raise the engine a bit to relieve the weight off them. First, lift the vehicle and securely support it on jackstands. Then, place a jack under the engine oil pan using a large block of wood between the jack head and the oil pan. Raise the engine just enough to take the weight off of the mounts. Check the mounts for cracks, hard rubber or separation from the metal backing. The rubber could crack down the middle and check that the rod on the front mount isn't bent. Using a large screwdriver or pry bar, check for any relative movement between the mount plates and the engine or frame. If movement is detected, lower the engine and tighten the mount fasteners. It helps reduce the rate of deterioration. First, disconnect the negative battery cable. Then, raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands if you haven't already. To separate the mount from the frame and engine, uninstall fasteners. Do not disconnect more than one mount at a time except during engine removal. The installation is completed in reverse order to removal. Next, thread locking compound must be used on the mount bolts. Finally, the bolts must be tightened securely.
