  Replacement of broken valve springs and defective valve stem seals can occur without the need to take off the cylinder heads. This usually requires two special tools and an air supply. When compressed air is unavailable, a length of nylon rope may prevent the valves from falling into the cylinder. To start, the valve cover of the cylinder head in question has to be removed. If all valve stem seals are being replaced then both covers.
