Mitsubishi Sigma Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to adjust the Neutral Safety Switch and Throttle Cable on Mitsubishi Sigma?
    A:
The Neutral Safety Switch should be adjusted with the gearshift lever in the Neutral position and parking brake applied. Loosen the two screws of the Neutral Safety Switch that hold it in a fixed position. Rotate the switch so that the end of the operating lever is directly over the flange on the switch body. Ensure that the flange and the lever holes are lined up. While tightening the mounting screws to 8 ft. lbs., securely hold the switch in place. With the parking brake applied and one foot on the brake, try the switch function by attempting engine start in each of the selector positions; engine start should occur in Park and Neutral only. Throttle Cable adjustment should be made with the engine warm and throttle is at the normal idling position. Lift the upper cover to access the nipple, then unscrew the bolts holding the lower cable bracket to the body. Modify the cable until the space between the lower cover and collar is 0.5-1.0mm, then tighten the lower cable bracket mounting bolt to 13 Nm (9½ ft. lbs). With the engine off, have someone pull the throttle totally open and hold it. Pull the cable upwards to ensure it has freedom of movement and adjust again if necessary. To adjust the kickdown switch on 1988-89 Galant models, clean around the servo cover, remove the kickdown servo switch, the snapring and cover, and loosen the lock nut. Use a special counter holding tool to prevent the kickdown servo piston from turning while tightening the adjustment screw to 9.8 Nm or 7.2 ft lbs, then loosen it and repeat once more. Make the adjustment screw tight (5.0 Nm, 3.6 ft. lbs). Back off screw 2-2¼ turns for 1988 models, 2½-2¾ turns for 1989 models. Hold the adjusting screw counter and tighten the locknut to 27 Nm or 20 ft. lbs., observing that the adjusting screw does not move out of position. If it does repeat. Put a new seal into the groove in the cover, install the cover without twisting the seal and install a snap ring. Last but not least, put the kickdown servo switch back on the cover and only torque it to 1 ft lb.
