To remove and install components for the Mirage and Galant, first disconnect the negative battery cable and, if equipped, disarm the air bag system. Get the hood lock release lever, and lower instrument panel knee protector, ducting, and steering wheel assembly out of the way, using proper steering wheel pullers to prevent damage. Next, remove the lower and upper steering column covers and the clip securing the wiring harness. To pull out the lock cylinder, insert your key into the steering lock cylinder, turn the key to ACC position and use a small tool to push the lock pin in (varies per model). Remove the key reminder switch if available; unplug ignition switch harness connector and remove ignition switch mounting screws. While pulling the cylinder from the vehicle, carefully unhook the key interlock cable for automatic transaxles. Install the bracket and bolts by cutting the special bolts of the steering lock. When the key is out, the slide lever and interlock cable can be fitted and greased. Check the interlock system. Install the ignition switch ensuring that it is properly aligned then connect the harness attach the steering column covers and knee guard. To finish, reconnect the negative battery cable, turn on the air bag system, if required, and see that the ignition switch and lock are working properly. Before proceeding with removal of diamond shaped air bag, ensure that 90 seconds have elapsed after the ignition switch has been turned to the LOCK position and the negative battery cable has been disconnected to prevent accidental air bag deployment. To start, disconnect the negative battery cable. Then disarm the air bag system. Finally, remove the steering wheel and hood lock release handle. Remove the knee protector switches and knee protector, then upper and lower steering column covers. Remove the ductwork, disconnect the ignition switch harness connectors, and remove the ignition switch from the interlock cylinder. To install the ignition switch, position it in the interlock housing so it aligns with the lock cylinder. Reconnect the ignition switch wiring harness and then reinstall the ductwork, steering column covers, knee guard, switches and hood release handle. At last, attach the steering wheel, ensure all column-mounted switches and ignition switch are functional, and reconnect the negative battery cable.
