The air bag system must be disabled before removing the steering wheel to avoid unexpected deployment resulting in property damage or personal injuries. If the vehicle has an airbag system, begin by properly disarming it, then disconnect the negative battery cable. Take out the hood lock release lever from the lower panel. Then remove the lower instrument panel knee protector. Remove the ductwork and lower knee panel, as well as the steering wheel assembly. Next, take off lower and upper steering column covers. For Diamante models, additionally remove the duct work for the foot shower and lap cooler. If required, remove the clip fastening the wiring harness to the steering column and disconnect all connectors. To access the column switch and clockspring assembly on a Galant and Diamante models, remove the retaining screws and pull out the assembly from the left side of the steering column. To gain access to the interlock cylinder, unscrew the
Ignition Switch and pull it out. Inserting the key to the steering lock cylinder and turning the key to ACC. Utilize a small pointed instrument to push the lock pin of the steering lock cylinder inward and extract the lock cylinder. If installed, remove the key reminder switch. In order to installation, you must start with Mirage. First, place the lock cylinder in the lock cylinder bracket and check that the lock operates correctly. If the lock bracket was replaced, break off the heads of the special bolts. For the models Galant and Diamante, fit the interlock housing with lock cylinder ensure lock pin snaps correctly into place and then fitted ignition switch ensuring keyway in lock cylinder then secured with mounting screws. Subsequently, install the column switch/clockspring assembly and attach the harness for Galant and Diamante. When fitted, connect the key reminder switch and harness, along with the wiring clip. If already removed, reinstall the ductwork of the lap cooler and foot shower, before going ahead to install the upper and lower steering column covers. If needed, install the knee protector, steering wheel, and lastly hood lock release lever. To complete the installation of the starter motor, reconnect the negative battery cable, enable the air bag system, and check: ignition switch and lock, for correct operation.
