    The air bag system must be disabled before removing the steering wheel to avoid unexpected deployment resulting in property damage or personal injuries. If the vehicle has an airbag system, begin by properly disarming it, then disconnect the negative battery cable. Take out the hood lock release lever from the lower panel. Then remove the lower instrument panel knee protector. Remove the ductwork and lower knee panel, as well as the steering wheel assembly. Next, take off lower and upper steering column covers. For Diamante models, additionally remove the duct work for the foot shower and lap cooler. If required, remove the clip fastening the wiring harness to the steering column and disconnect all connectors. To access the column switch and clockspring assembly on a Galant and Diamante models, remove the retaining screws and pull out the assembly from the left side of the steering column. To gain access to the interlock cylinder, unscrew the Ignition Switch and pull it out. Inserting the key to the steering lock cylinder and turning the key to ACC.
