The brake light switch is found on the mounting bracket for the brake pedal, and it activates the rear brake light when pressed. Disengaging the left-side under-dash panel and the heater/air conditioning duct allows access to the switch. First of all, you might want to check the fuse if the brake lights are out. If the fuse is still intact, then voltage will need to be checked on the feed wire to the switch, and if no voltage is found, then the wire from the switch to the fuse box will need some work done on it. When the brake is engaged, the terminal wire at the brake switch output should show voltage if voltage is present; replace the switch if it does not. When the voltage is confirmed, check for power on the brake light wires at the tail light housings while the brake pedal is pressed. If voltage is not present, the circuit between the switch and brake lights needs to be repaired. When you feel voltage present, a bad ground is checked by probing the ground wire terminal at the tail light connector with a jumper wire arranged with a good ground; when the brake lights activate, repair the ground circuit. It would be prudent to consider that, although unlikely, all of the brake light bulbs are burned out. The electric connector from the brake light switch should be disengaged for replacement and adjustment. With respect to models manufactured in 1998 or earlier, the switch can be taken off by loosening the locknut and taking it off the bracket. To reinstall, perform the reverse. The switch should be set such that a gap of 0.020 to 0.040 inches (0.51 to 1.02 mm) exists between the switch body and brake pedal before locking the nut firmly. On models from 1999 and onwards, the turn switch should be turned counter-clockwise to unlock the switch from its holder and pulled out. To install, insert the switch into its holder at a slight counterclockwise angle until the switch contacts the bracket on the brake pedal, then pull the switch straight back until there is approximately 3/64 inch clearance on the switch from the bracket. Then, rotate the switch clockwise until it locks in place and plug the electrical connector into the switch.
