Mitsubishi Galant Brake Rotor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to properly replace a Brake Rotor on Mitsubishi Galant?
    A:
Unscrew the lug nuts of the wheels, lift the vehicle and place it on jackstands. Take the wheel off, and replace lug nuts to keep the disc in place, with washers where needed. When you are working on the rear Brake Rotor, release parking brake. Disassemble the brake caliper and pads, but do not disconnect the brake hose attached to the caliper, to prevent bleeding the brakes when reassembled. Once the caliper bolts have been taken off, hang the caliper out of the way using a piece of wire. Look visually on the disc surface at the score marks, and damage; shallow scratches and shallow grooves are normal but deep scoring necessitates disc removal and refinishing. Examine both sides of the disc, and in the case of severe wear, the disc has to be replaced. To measure disc runout, a dial indicator can be placed (approximately 1/2-inch) outward of the outer rim of the disc, aligned to 0, and the disc turned, making sure that the dial does not go beyond the maximum allowable runout. No matter what the reading, discs are supposed to be resurfaced to get a smooth finish and flat surface to remove brake pedal pulsation. Unless re-surfaced, apply emery cloth to surface in a swirling motion to remove glaze. Make sure that the disc is not machined to the thinness that is not below the recommended minimum allowable thickness, and is cast into the inside of the disc and is verifiable using a micrometer. Take off the caliper mounting bracket, lug nuts, which had the disc attached, and take off the disc off of the hub. When the disc is stuck, insert two bolts of correct size and thread pitch to push it off the hub. Install the new disc with the wheel studs, mount the bracket, and clamp the bolts to the required torque. Attach the Brake Pads and caliper and connect the caliper guide pin/lock pin to the required torque. Attach the wheel, lower the vehicle and screw in the lug nuts up to the required torque. Use the brake pedal several times and make sure that the brakes are working properly by ensuring the brake pads are touching the disc.
