Mitsubishi Galant Heater Core Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to properly remove and replace the heater core in an air conditioning system on Mitsubishi Galant?
    A:
Begin by having the air conditioning system discharged by a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning shop. Next, drain the cooling system and disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core inlet and outlet pipes at the firewall by tracing the hoses, loosening the clamps, and disconnecting them. Remove the instrument panel, followed by the center bracket bolts, starting with the right side, then the upper section, and finally the left side. Take out the harness push-on fasteners from the center bracket and remove the center bracket from the passenger compartment. Disconnect the harness connector, then remove the right side vent and the joint duct from the heater control unit and blower housing. Remove the automatic compressor controller by disconnecting the harness connector, noting that V6 models have an automatic belt lock controller. Next, remove the center vent by taking off the mounting nut and separating it from the heater control unit. Remove the heater control unit mounting nuts from the upper section, front, and lower section. For 1999 and later models, remove the center reinforcement mounting bolts and nuts from the right side of the passenger compartment, the center section of the dash area, and the left side of the center reinforcement. Remove the blower unit by taking out the mounting nuts and bolts, then removing the assembly from the passenger compartment. Without removing the center reinforcement, install guide bolts into the left and right sides to keep it in position, and pull the reinforcement bar four inches forward for clearance. Carefully remove the heater control unit from the dash area, then remove the heater core retaining screws and pull the heater core out of the housing. Remove the clips from the heater housing, separate the two halves, and clean the coolant from the housing. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to reconnect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses at the firewall. Finally, refill the cooling system and have the air conditioning system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
