Mitsubishi Lancer Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and reinstall a cylinder head on Mitsubishi Lancer?
    A:
To take off the cylinder head, 10 mm multi-hex socket is required. Then a valve spring compressor and its adaptor are used for dismantling and assembling. Before commencing any work, allow the engine to cool down otherwise the head may get distorted. To start, lessen the fuel system pressure, then take off the negative battery terminal. Subsequently, raise vehicle on jack stands and drain cooling system. Tag and disconnect cooling hoses and wiring from the thermostat housing and remove. The thermostat needs checking when a cylinder head gasket is replaced. Take off the inlet and Exhaust Manifolds, and remove the power steering pump along with its retaining bracket if required. Remove the high tension leads or coils, spark plugs, rocker cover and Timing Belt. Disconnect the wiring of the distributor or crankshaft, or Camshaft position sensors for some models. To begin loosening the cylinder head retaining bolts in the reverse order of tightening. Afterwards, lift the cylinder head away from the block using a lever to break any gasket adhesion. To prevent damage, do not turn the camshaft once it has been removed. See to it that the cylinder block and head surfaces are cleaned and free of gasket. The cylinder block must be checked for any distortion or damage, as well as the cylinder head surfaces. The installation is the opposite of the removal and it should be clean and correct. The gaskets and seals used for installation must be new. Prior to installation, check the measure on the cylinder head bolts and ensure the timing is correct if the cam is installed. Bolts should be progressively tightened as per specification and valve clearance adjusted (if necessary) before refitting in the reverse order For disassembly, on a clean fabric, the cylinder head is set; the valves should be marked for re-installation. Rockers and camshaft are removed. Using a valve spring compressor, establish a workspace that will allow you to remove valves in an orderly way. Thoroughly clean and examine the cylinder head and valves for damage and reface. When assembling the valve, ensure that all parts are clean, fit new seals, lubricate the valve stem, and install the spring and retainer. Also, ensure that everything stays in place. The last step is to install the camshaft and rocker assembly by tightening the bolts in a specified order.
