Mitsubishi Lancer Ignition Switch

The Mitsubishi Lancer Ignition Switch channelizes the battery power to the required circuits for the car to be able to start, run, or deliver power to the vehicle electrical systems when the engine is not operating. Fitted directly to the steering column, the Ignition Switch associates with a mechanical locking cylinder accepting a coded key that is unique to the car. The driver can rotate the switch through LOCK, OFF, ACC, ON, and START positions when a correct key is inserted. When in the LOCK position, the steering shaft is secured, the selector is in PARK, current does not reach the engine or electrical systems, and the key can be removed. For the Mitsubishi Lancer, ACC powers items such as the radio or windows. The ON position supplies power to the ignition, fuel, and electrical systems needed for driving. The START position sends additional current to the starter motor, along with ignition and injection circuits, and immediately returns to ON once the engine fires. In the Ignition Switch, the internal contacts and wafer tumblers wear, which can cause a hard turn of the key, loss of ACC power, stalling, and no start. A built-in coded key feature interacts with the car's onboard computer. This prevents the engine from starting unless the proper coded key is applied. Thus, if the mechanical lock is compromised, this theft prevention technique will still work. This feature has been adapted across the range of Mitsubishi models like the Lancer and others. In case of any deterioration in contacts, temporary power interruption due to vibration will cause, at least, lighting darkening. Further cutting electrical power, message engine misfiring, and stopping it. The integrated assembly is the main power gateway in all Mitsubishi Lancer models, so the Ignition Switch must properly function.

Mitsubishi Lancer Ignition Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Ignition Lock Cylinder and Ignition Switch on Mitsubishi Lancer?
    A:
Remove the ignition switch from the steering column by releasing the steering column adjusting lever and lowering the column to its lowest position. Withdraw the ignition key from the ignition switch first. After that, the retaining screws are removed, and the steering column covers removed. This is followed by delinking the ignition switch wiring from the rear of the ignition switch. Take out the retaining screw and, taking note of its installed position, withdraw the switch from the lock assembly. Place the switch in the same position it was in when removed and screw it to the lock assembly above in a tight manner. Make secure connections to the ignition switch wiring and check the operation of the ignition switch/steering lock before installing the column covers. In order to extract the lock cylinder, the negative battery terminal must get disconnected first, then the steering column adjusting lever has to be released and the column set at its lowest position. Finally, the ignition key has to be withdrawn. Detach the screws and remove the vacuum column covers. Put the ignition key in the lock and turn it to the ACC position. Then, using a thin screwdriver, press down on the locking latch while gently pulling the lock cylinder out of the housing. To install the lock cylinder in the lock housing, turn the ignition key to ACC position and press it down until the mechanism gets locked. Check the steering lock operation before installing the steering column casing.
