Before detaching the exhaust manifold, first, disconnect the battery's negative cable. Engage the parking brake, block the rear wheels, lift the vehicle high enough to work on it, and support it with jackstands. Detach the exhaust system from the exhaust manifold by removing the nuts underneath, using penetrating oil on their screws to loosen them. For carbureted engines, remove the air cleaner assembly. Disconnect the oxygen sensor wire. If a secondary air system is fitted, apply penetrating oil and unscrew the flare nut on the air injection tube, before removing it from the manifold. After, unscrew the three bolts holding the heat shield to the exhaust manifold and lift the heat shield off. Use penetrating oil on the threads and take off the nuts, brackets and emission components holding the exhaust manifold. Now, slide the manifold off the studs and pull it out of the engine compartment. In preparation, clean and examine all threaded fasteners and repair. Ensure any gasket material is removed from the jointing surface and check for damage cracks. A new gasket is placed on the studs, and the manifold is fitted with the nuts tightened in stages, starting at the centre and going outwards to torque. In reverse of the removal process reinstall other parts and run engine to check exhaust leak.
