The CMP sensor has a mounting location dependent on model and determines cylinder position for the ignition start-up signal and sequential fuel injection signal to each cylinder. The sensor for the 1994 and 1995 2.4L DOHC models was located at the left end of the cylinder head near the intake camshaft timing belt sprocket. In the 1998 and earlier 2.4L SOHC models and the 1999 and later 3.0L V6 engines, the CMP sensor is located in the distributor. The distributor must be replaced as the CMP sensor is not sold separately. For all models manufactured starting from 1999 with 2.4L SOHC they have a sensor on the left end of the cylinder head. The end opposite the timing belt. Before starting work, make sure the ignition key is in OFF position. For 1994 and 1995 models, remove the timing belt cover and timing belt, disconnect the CMP sensor electrical connector, and remove the CMP sensor from the cylinder head after removing its mounting bolts. Installation is the reverse of removal. On 1998 and earlier 2.4L SOHC models and 1999 and later 3.0L V6 models, pull the distributor to release the entire assembly. Install is the reverse of removal. For models with 2.4L SOHC engines in 1999 and later, remove the air intake duct. After that disconnect the electrical connector of the CMP sensor. Following this remove the retaining bolt to pull off the sensor. Installation is the reverse.
