Hold the piston number one at Top Dead Center, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Disassemble air cleaner assembly and hoses, engage parking brake, block rear wheels and lift the front of the car high on jackstands. Disengage the power steering pump drivebelt, the air conditioner drivebelt and tensioner. Unscrew the water pump pulley bolts and take out the rest of the drivebelts. Unbolt and take off water pump pulley, then unbolt the bolts holding the timing belt upper cover and take it off then the lower one. In case of reusing the timing belt, note it with an indication of direction of rotation. Loose the adjusting bolt and adjust the timing belt tensioner so that it is moved towards the water pump, temporarily held in place. Take out the splash pan under the engine then take out the large center bolt on the crankshaft pulley with rag and chain wrench (where needed). When the bolt is tight, loosening it can be done by an assistant using a flat-blade screwdriver after the cover has been removed, inserted into the flywheel/driveplates ring gear teeth. Make sure that the tensioner bolts are not tight, remove the timing belt off the sprockets, and lay it aside. In case of removal of the camshaft, unscrew the camshaft sprocket bolt and slide the sprocket off keeping it stationary with a large screwdriver. Disassemble: To remove the plug on the left side of the cylinder block, use a screwdriver or a long punch to hold the Silent Shaft stationary then loosen the bolt that holds the Silent Shaft sprocket. Unscrew the belt tensioner of the Silent shaft and take out the Silent shaft belt. In case of changing the crankshaft front oil seal, peel off the crankshaft sprocker and the belt guide flange keeping track of its installation position. Test the tensioner pulley using a hand rotation test as it checks any roughness and excessive play and physically inspections the sprockets checking any damages and wear and changes the parts as required. Examine the timing belt, watching out of cracks, separation, wear, missing teeth, and oil contamination, replacing it when it is in question. Install timing belt sprockets removed with care to have the camshaft sprocket indexed by punch marks. Install the lower sprocket and then slide the belt guide flange around the crankshaft making the chamfered side face outward. Adjust the timing marks on the camshaft, crankshaft and oil pump sprockers to the marks on the cylinder head and front case, taking care that the silent shaft is in place. Install timing belt B, positioning the timing marks on each sprocker where they align with the timing marks on the front case, and making sure that there is no slack on the tension side. Install the timing belt B tensioner sprocker properly and tighten the tensioner bolt, and check the deflection of the belt. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft sprocket and then the camshaft sprocket keeping the timing belt tensioned. Unscrew the tensioner hold-down bolt to put the spring tension on the belt and rescrew. Install crankshaft pulley, and position the locating pin and tighten crankshaft pulley bolts ensuring that the crankshaft stays in place. Rotate crankshaft clockwise by six full revolutions, observing the rotation of timing marks, and correcting as necessary. In case the tension is wrong, then adjust the tensioner and measure the distance between the timing belt and Line C making sure that it is around 9/16-inch. Install the tensioner bolts to the required torque, reattach the other parts in the order in which they were disassembled and then start the engine to adjust the ignition timing and road test the car.
