Exercise caution when removing and installing brake components, which may contain older brake pads or shoes that contain asbestos (a substance that causes cancer). Do not clean brake surfaces with compressed air to avoid inhaling brake dust. To remove the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir, you first need to raise and support the vehicle safely. Then remove the tire and the wheel assemblies of Mirage and 1990-93 Galant's front brakes. Remove the caliper guide and lock pins and then lift the caliper assembly and secure it with wire, making sure it does not hang by the
Brake Line. Take out the brake pads, spring clip, and shims; make a note for reference. Utilize lug nuts to secure the disc, then using a C-clamp, push the pistons back into the caliper bore, lubricate the slide points, and re-fit the brake pads, shims and spring clip. Gently place the caliper on its support, ensuring the boot of the piston is not pinched and that the hose is not twisted. Take off the brake caliper assembly. Reinstall and tighten caliper guide and lock pins. Refit tire and wheel assemblies. Lower vehicle. Pump brake pedal several times until firm. Road test. When doing the rear brakes, do the same thing. Loosen the
Parking Brake Cable and detach the parking brake assembly from the caliper. Then remove and install as described. Service of the rear system is performed like at the front as the caliper has no parking brake system. The same process is carried out like that of front brakes for Diamante and 1994-00 Galant. During inspection, observe the caliber body check port and check the thickness of the brake linings. The standard thickness is 0.39 in. (10 mm) whereas limit is 0.08 in. (2.0 mm). If the limit is exceeded, the pads on both sides of the brake disc should be replaced, and any pads that are worn down on one side should be replaced with new pads on the opposite side. Also, if the pads differ significant thickness the sliding condition of the piston and guide pin should be checked.
