If a vehicle has rear drum brakes, disable the air bag system before starting any repairs. To remove the center console, take the negative battery cable out, unscrew the console bolts and remove the rear seat cushion. Safely elevate the vehicle and remove the brake drum and shoes on the rear wheel while disconnecting the cable from the parking brake strut lever and removing any frame retainers. Reference the color-coded parking brake cables and secure them to the rear actuator. Install the brake shoes and drum. The rear brake shoes and the parking brake stroke should be adjusted so that the parking brake holds the car on the slope. For disc rear brake cars, remove the air bag, disconnect battery like in case of drum rear brake cars. First, take out the centre console and rear seat cushion. Next, disconnect the rear brake cables from the actuator. Lastly, remove the parking brake cable clip. Install the new cables, and adjust and tension them, then check the brakes' operation. According to the 1990-93 Galant service manual, you should remove the center console and rear seat cushion. Furthermore, loosen the cable adjuster. Following that, remove the brake drum and shoes. The new cables shall be installed, parking brake adjusted and a drag test shall be done on rear brakes. For the 1994-00 Galant, follow the same steps but check that the parking brake lever is adjusted to the correct number of notches. For the Diamante, disable the air bag, detach the centre console, and adjust the parking brake shoes before finally adjusting the cable mechanism. Following adjustments, be sure to examine if the parking brake holds the vehicle.
