To begin, relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank for 1994 through 1998 non-California models or the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit for California models and all 1999 and later models. For non-California models, the fuel pump and fuel level sending unit are separate, so disassembly is not necessary when replacing either. After removing the fuel pump, some disassembly is required, starting with the next step. To replace the fuel level sending unit on non-California models, simply remove and install a new unit. For California models and all 1999 and later models, the fuel pump and fuel level sending unit are an integral assembly, requiring separation after removal from the tank. For 1994 through 1998 models, remove the fuel pump from its frame by taking out the screw from the bracket, removing the clip securing the inlet strainer, and detaching the inlet strainer from the pump. Next, remove the hose clamp and pull the lower end of the fuel pump loose from the bracket, then withdraw the pump from the hose. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump and separate it from the frame, inspecting the fuel strainer for contamination and replacing it if necessary. Installation is the reverse of removal. For the fuel level sending unit, remove the rear seat, pull back the carpet to access the service hole cover, disconnect the electrical connector, and remove the retaining nuts before carefully extracting the assembly from the tank. Remove the retaining screws to separate the fuel level sending unit from the assembly and install the new unit onto the frame, reversing the removal process. For California models, follow the same procedures as for non-California models when separating the pump and fuel level sending unit. For 1999 and later models, remove the fuel level sending unit and inspect the rubber seal for damage, replacing it if necessary. Separate the pump support assembly from the fuel reservoir cup and the fuel pump from the fuel filter. If replacing the fuel pump or inlet fuel sock, remove the sock and inspect the spacer on the fuel pump outlet pipe for damage. Remove the O-ring from the fuel filter and inspect it for wear, replacing it if necessary, and do the same for the grommet inside the upper end of the fuel filter. When reattaching the fuel pump/filter assembly to the pump support assembly, ensure the two springs are installed and the locking tabs are aligned. Reassembly is otherwise the reverse of disassembly.
