To take off the engine, the engine has to be detached from the vehicle and then mounted properly on the stand. If you haven't already, remove the transaxle, then remove the cylinder head, front cover, timing belt or chains, and sprockets. Following this, take out the oil pump, flywheel, pilot bearing or torque converter drive plate, adapter plate and crankshaft bushing, remove the oil pan and pick-up screen. If needed, remove the rear plate and bell housing cover, followed by the rear main seal housing and seal. Shift the crankshaft to the rear and measure the forward motion with a dial indicator to check for crankshaft end play. Excessive end play indicates wear. Use the engine's rotation to take off the connecting rod caps and clearly mark each cap with its cylinder number. Remove the main bearing end caps in an orderly fashion, as they are marked with arrows and numbered. Once all of the bolts are removed, the crankshaft can be lifted off the engine taking care not to damage the polished surfaces. Using a solvent, clean the crankshaft as well as the bearing surfaces. Make sure that the bearing shells are replaced in their original location. Check the crankshaft journals for wear and if machine by a reputable shop and use new undersize bearings. Make sure that all oil passages are clean and check crank pins and main bearing journals for wear and taper. Check bearing surfaces for damage and replace any badly worn areas. After cleaning and inspecting the crankshaft and checking the clearance bearing, assemble the crankshaft, then measure the media in the oil clearance. Carefully place the crankshaft in the block, keeping everything clean. torque all of the rod and main bearing caps to specification. Do not turn the crankshaft. If bearing clearance is in order, the old bearings may be used if they are in satisfactory condition. If not, consider the possibility of machining the crankshaft and fitting up matching bearings for the best service life of the engine break-in period. Prior to final assembly, use clean engine oil to lubricate all bearing surfaces. Ensure that oil holes and grooves in the bearings are properly aligned. Install main bearing caps back to their original position turning up evenly in steps and refitting crankshaft seals, oil pick-up screen, oil pan, etc. without delay to prevent grease entry.
