Mitsubishi Lancer Brake Master Cylinder

The Mitsubishi Lancer Brake Master Cylinder transforms the force applied on the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure that moves brake fluid through two independent circuits to slow or stop the vehicle. Mounted forward of the vacuum power booster is a pushrod driven by the brake pedal that operates a primary piston and then a secondary piston. Because both circuits will still produce a stopping force, one can be lost. Housed in cast iron or aluminum, each piston features seals and springs. These compress the fluid when the pedal is pressed and return the liquid back into the master cylinder by the spring action of the seals when the pedal is released. Within the engine compartment, the Mitsubishi Lancer Brake Master Cylinder is commonly secured alongside the booster, making it easy to detect any leakage through the firewall. A reservoir feeds the bore through ports that open with deflection of the piston cup. The reservoir may be integral utilizing a single wire-bail cap or, in the case of a nylon or plastic container, external with one or two threaded caps, each style sealed by O-rings. A constant supply of fluid to the system keeps air out, while two-circuit construction, required for cars since 1967, gives a safety backup. Moisture corrosion or end seals' deterioration can cause internal or external leaks, lowering pedals and reducing braking. Such conditions require an inspection of the Mitsubishi Lancer's system and Brake Master Cylinder. By keeping the seals intact and the reservoir sound, the Mitsubishi Lancer Brake Master Cylinder continues to apply a hydraulic force to the brakes to create a reliable stopping force.

Mitsubishi Lancer Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Brake Master Cylinder on Mitsubishi Lancer?
    A:
In order to remove and install the master cylinder, you must first put a cover on the right-hand front mudguard. Take off the cover for the master cylinder reservoir. Remove the float and extract the brake fluid with a syringe while placing it in a container. Unplug the wiring of the master cylinder reservoir level sensor. For bidirectional manual transmission versions like those of CG and CH where a common clutch master cylinder is fitted, disconnect the reservoir hose from that on the brake master cylinder, blocking it against the entry of dirt and securing it to the firewall with the end elevated. Using a pipe spanner, remove the hydraulic pipes from the master cylinder body. Plug the ends of the pipes and the master cylinder openings to prevent dirt from entering, and to retain as much fluid as possible. Take off the master cylinder retaining nuts and remove the master cylinder from the vehicle. If any brake fluid spills onto the paintwork, wash it off immediately with water as it is corrosive to paintwork. Do not depress the brake pedal or disturb the pushrod after removal or it will damage the Brake Booster. To install the parts, reverse the removal steps. If the master cylinder has been dismantled, fill the reservoir with clean brake fluid and pump the cylinder pistons until fluid emerges from the brake pipe apertures. Mount the master cylinder to the brake booster and tighten the retaining nuts and pipes to the specified torque settings. Finally, connect the wiring. Bleed the hydraulic brake system and, if necessary, the clutch system for the CG and CH manual transmission models. Ultimately, perform a road test to confirm brake functionality. It is more cost-effective to install a new or an exchange cylinder than to overhaul an original master cylinder assembly that is worn or leaking.
