Mitsubishi Lancer Clutch Master Cylinder

The Clutch Master Cylinder of the Mitsubishi Lancer is a hydraulic device that converts the motion of the clutch pedal into the pressure required to disengage the transmission from the engine. The component, which is placed between the pedal and the clutch line, is a metal chamber filled with brake-type fluid. The piston is fitted inside that pushes the fluid through a narrow tube towards the slave cylinder when the driver presses the pedal. The force exerted by the hydraulic fluid causes the slave piston to move, disengaging the clutch. A well-functioning Clutch Master Cylinder offers a consistent feel through the pedal. However, if your Clutch Master Cylinder is worn, it may feel spongy, stay down, and make it difficult to change gears. Visible fluid in the area of the pedals or noisy engagement could also indicate that the Clutch Master Cylinder no longer holds pressure. Mitsubishi owners whose Lancer shows symptoms that demonstrate poor clutch performance should know this is a critical component for overall drivability. The performance of the Clutch Master Cylinder directly impacts gear engagement. In the Mitsubishi model range, the cylinder uses a basic hydraulic layout similar to that found in many manual transmissions, but its fitment has been customized to match Lancer pedal geometry and hydraulic routing. With regular attention to fluid condition and the integrity of seals, the shifting action of the Mitsubishi Lancer can be kept light and predictable.

Mitsubishi Lancer Clutch Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Clutch Master Cylinder, and what steps should be taken to ensure proper clutch operation on Mitsubishi Lancer?
    A:
To take out and reinstall CE models, work inside vehicle to remove lower dash panel from below steering column. After that, remove the clip and pull the clevis pin that retains the engagement of the master cylinder pushrod to the clutch pedal and don't lose washer. In the engine compartment, place a cloth beneath the hydraulic pipe fitting, and using a pipe spanner, disconnect the hydraulic pipe from the clutch master cylinder. Seal the pipe to prevent the entry of dirt. Take off the mounting nuts of the master cylinder and take out the master cylinder and reservoir from the vehicle. Be careful not to spill clutch fluid on the paintwork. If your clutch fluid spills, rinse off the area with clean water and leave it to dry naturally without wiping. fitting is just like removal in reverse order, being mindful to torque the hydraulic pipe nut to the specified torque and bleed the clutch hydraulic system. After completing an installation, the vehicle should undergo a road test and a check of the clutch operation. If necessary, adjustments should be made to the clutch pedal height and free travel. For CG and CH models, remove the hose connecting the brake master cylinder reservoir to the clutch master cylinder in the engine bay and cover the end of the hose with a plastic bag to prevent dirt getting in. Next, follow the same steps as for CE models but be sure not to spill the clutch fluid while removing the lower dash panel, clevis pin and master cylinder. The installation is identical to that of the CE models, which is the hydraulic pipe nut and bleeding the system. If there's wear or a leak in the master cylinder, it is often cheaper to fix it with a new or exchange cylinder rather than recondition the old master.
