To remove and install, you will work in the engine compartment, where you will remove the air cleaner assembly, followed by the battery. Next, remove the clip and washer that hold the inner Shift Cable to the selector lever and lower the cable from the pin. Utilize a long nose plier to pinch together the retaining tabs of the outer Shift Cable and detach it from the bracket on the transaxle. If necessary, disconnect the wire and remove it from the work area. Take the centre console out of the car, and for CE types, disconnect the harness from the transaxle ECU, and undo the bolts holding the automatic transaxle ECU and take it out of the car, then undo the retaining bolts and take out the ECU retaining bracket. Remove the inner Shift Cable from the selector lever and release the outer Shift Cable from the bracket with long nose pliers. Detach the nuts securing the outer cover to the firewall and rubber seal, and remove the Shift Cable from the vehicle. The task of installation requires to feed the new wire through the firewall hole, to make sure it is properly seated and rubber seal does not get damaged. Ensure that the Shift Cable retaining tabs are fully seated in the brackets. If required, adjust the Shift Cable. In order to make the adjustment, first place the handbrake on firmly and move gear selector lever to Neutral. Ensure that a 6 mm drill can be inserted through the shift lever into the boss on the inhibitor switch. In case it does not, loosen the locknut after removing the retaining clip and disconnect the Shift Cable from the lever on the inhibitor switch. Move the transaxle selector lever fully clockwise to the Park position and back to Neutral, ensuring the drill bit slides through easily. Applying the prescribed torque value tighten the bolts without disturbing the switch position. Check that the selector lever is still in Neutral, and with help, gently push the selector lever to Reverse, not pressing the button. Join the Shift Cable to the inhibitor switch lever and tighten the locknut securely, keeping the transaxle selector lever undisturbed. Please check the selector lever operates freely and that the quadrant indicator corresponds to the selected range. Lastly, ensure the engine only starts in Park and Neutral. Check the functioning of the reverse lamps too.
