The Neutral Safety Switch for 1990-97 Mirage and 1990-93 Galant can be removed and installed with the negative battery cable disconnected, the selector cable disconnected from lever, and two retaining screws removed to lift the switch off. For the installation, take the new switch and place it into position without tightening the bolts, until it is adjusted in place. Thereafter, connect the selector cable and ensure that the engine starts in P and N selections only and the reverse lights operate in R only. For the 1994-00 Galant and 1998-00 Mirage, as always, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Remove the nut attaching the shift control cable from the transaxle manual shaft lever. Position the control cable out of the way. The neutral position of the manual shaft lever should first be set. The nut and lever must be removed next. Followed by disconnecting the Neutral Safety Switch electrical connector. And finally, remove the switch mounting bolts. To install, attach the Neutral Safety Switch to the transaxle manual shaft and install the mounting bolts, but don't tighten them until adjusted. Ensure the manual shaft lever is in Neutral. Align the holes of the switch and tighten the bolts. Connect the electrical connector. Install the control cable. Reconnect the negative battery cable and check that it is working properly. For the Diamante, disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for at least 90 seconds. Next, disconnect the selector cable, and remove the retaining screws. Finally, install the lever, tightening bolts lightly. Align the holes in the switch body and tighten the mounting bolts. Connect the selector cable. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Check that the engine starts only in P and N and the reverse lights operate in R. To make adjustment to the 1990-97 Mirage or 1990-93 Galant, first disconnect the negative battery cable. Then, locate the Neutral Safety Switch. Apply the parking brake and place the transaxle in N. Loosen the shift cable adjustment nut, put the gearshift selector lever in N, and align holes in the switch body before tightening the bolts. After removing any slack in the shift cable and tightening the locknut, check that the switch lever corresponds with the selector lever position. The engine should only start in P and N, and reverse lights should operate in R.
