If the drive belt is slipping and you've already checked the tension, The belt is likely defective and must be removed and checked to see if the pulleys rotate freely. A running engine, after just 5 minutes, starts to progressively wear away at the belt that was previously grabbed. For all models except those fitted with the 2.4 litre engine, the air conditioning compressor and the power steering pump are driven from the same belt and the renewal or adjustment procedure is the same for all models. All 1.8 and 2.0 litre models have a separate tensioner from the power steering pump, while 1.5 litre models that do not have power steering have the tensioner mounted on the air conditioning bracket. Remove the retainers and splashguard in the driver side wheel arch. Subsequently, check the tension for the belt by applying a force of 98 Newtons. A new belt should deflect by 7-9 mm while a used one should deflect by 10-11 mm. Tighten the adjustment bolt in the clockwise direction until the tensioner touches the belt, and then tighten the pivot bolts and lock nut. To adjust, loosen tensioner locknut and turn the adjusting bolt to change tension. Finally, tighten locknut and pivot bolts securely. Once a new belt is fitted, run the engine for five minutes and check its tension again. For the alternator belt, the process is similar, as the alternator belt drives the water pump on 1.5 litre models, whilst on 1.8 and 2.0 litre models the timing belt does. Take off the splashguard. Check tension using the same force. Renew or adjust if necessary by loosening the locknut and pivot bolt on the alternator assembly. For the 2.4 litre engine, the drive belts should be inspected in the same way. If the indicator mark on the tensioner is not within the limit marks, replace the belt. In order to replace the splashguard, first remove the splashguard, then use the tensioner to loosen the belt. Next, check each pulley for proper operation before installing the new belt. Make sure the belt is fully seated on both pulleys before releasing the tensioner, then start the engine and shortly check the indicator mark on the tensioner. Reattach any parts you've removed to get to the drive.
