  Q: Is checking and adjusting Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve clearances necessary for noisy valves, or after cylinder head work on Mitsubishi Lancer?

  Valve clearances should be checked and adjusted if the valves are noisy, the vehicle has a significant amount of mileage, or if cylinder head work has been performed, with adjustment recommended prior to idle speed check. In order to adjust the settings, the engine must be started and run until it is at normal operating temperature. Start the adjustment with a cold engine if cylinder head and rocker arm service occurred. It is a good idea to clean around the rocker cover to prevent dirt from entering the engine. Remove the retaining bolts and withdraw the cover, removing the spark plugs to rotate the engine more easily. Turn the crankshaft pulley in the clockwise direction until position No 1 is at TDC on its compression stroke position. Check that the timing mark on the timing belt cover is aligned with the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley. Observe the rotor button to ensure it points at the No 1 sector in the distributor cap. When looking at No 4 cylinder, it is best to search for the rocking position. This is when two of the valves are just closing and the other two are just opening. Utilize a feeler gauge with a thickness of 0.20mm to measure the clearance between the rocker arms and the valve stems of No 1 cylinder inlet valves. If an adjustment is necessary, loosen the lock nut on the adjusting screw of the rocker arm and turn the screw until the gap gauge goes in with slight drag. Thereafter, lock the nut and recheck the gap. For a 1.5 litre model, repeat this procedure using a 0.25 mm feeler gauge for No 1 exhaust, No 2 inlet and No 3 exhaust valves. For 1.8, 2.0 and 2.4 litre models use a 0.30 mm gauge. Clockwise, turn the crankshaft pulley until No 1 cylinder is on TDC and No 4 cylinder's valves are rocking after making one full turn, then check and adjust No 2 exhaust, No 3 inlet and No 4 inlet and exhaust valves as previously detailed. After cleaning the area where the rocker cover sits, check the seal. If it is hard and brittle or showing signs of oil leaking, replace the gasket. As a last step, you need to replace the rocker cover, plugs, and leads. You can now reconnect the P.C.V. valve and breather hose and connect the leads and coil packs as they were removed. Start the vehicle and look for leaks at the rocker cover. Fix them as required.
