To take out the parts, first raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands. Afterwards, take the rocker cover off and then the
Timing Belt. Be careful not to turn the crankshaft or
Camshaft with the timing belt removed. Engine damage may occur if this is done. To retain the camshaft sprocket, use a screwdriver to hold it while removing the retaining bolt, ensuring that the
Cylinder Head is not damaged. Loosen the rocker-shaft retaining bolts little by little, from the ends to the centre, to relieve pressure. Remove the retaining bolts and carefully lift the rocker arms and shafts off the cylinder head and place them on a clean, flat location. Before disassembly, mark the rocker arms and the installed position of each rocker shaft. Remove the rocker arms and thrust washers from the rocker shafts in order. 1.5 litre models have springs on the inlet side rocker shaft. Thoroughly clean parts in solvent and check rocker shafts for excessive wear and damage. If wear is evident, check the diameters of the shaft and arm against specification, renewing as necessary. Confirm that the roller on the camshaft end of each rocker arm rotates freely and has an even wear pattern. If any roller is damaged, renew that roller and check the corresponding camshaft lobe. Each rocker arm adjusting screw should be inspected for wear. Lightly worn screws should be dressed with an oil stone and excessively worn screws renewed. To assemble, follow the reverse steps of the disassembly but ensure all the passages and holes are clear, lubricate the components with clean engine oil but do not oil the bolt holes of rocker shaft assembly. Install the rocker arms and thrust springs in their original location or at the location illustrated if no marks were made. Install each component back to the cylinder head in its original position, after which the rocker shaft retaining bolts are installed engaging the washers on 1.8 litre models. In a spiral direction, from the centre outwards, progressively tighten to torque all the bolts to keep the rocker shafts level to avoid damage. Refit the cam shaft sprocket to the timing mark you previously noted during removal. Tighten to specification. Once you have installed the timing belt and rocker cover, check whether the valve clearances have been disturbed if the rocker arm adjusting screw and locknut were. Similarly, another check can be done once the engine reaches operating temperature. Turn the engine on and check oil leaks; repair the leaks.
