Mitsubishi Lancer Throttle Body

The Throttle Body of the Mitsubishi Lancer controls the amount of air entering the engine, matching airflow to driver pedal input for accurate fuel delivery. As the accelerator is pressed, the butterfly valve opens wider, allowing more air into the intake manifold. As this is taking place, the Powertrain Control Module compensates with a longer injector pulse width. Positioned between the air cleaner and intake manifold, the Throttle Body houses a pivoting butterfly valve mounted on a shaft. A port on the aluminum housing of the Throttle Body bypasses the plate and feeds the idle air control valve to maintain stable idle speed when the valve itself is mostly closed. A throttle position sensor is located at the end of the shaft and sends the angle of the plate to the computer, which also uses signals from airflow and vacuum to fine-tune the amount of fuel supplied. Older mechanical linkages typically involved a cable connecting the pedal to turn the shaft. However, many Mitsubishi models like the Lancer now use electronic throttle control. This type of setup has multiple pedal sensors reporting the position. There is an electric motor on the assembly that moves the plate. This reduces instances of mechanical bind and works with vehicle stability control systems. Within typical Mitsubishi Lancer service life, either a shaft bore may wear down or deposits may build up and inhibit motion or throw idle. Cleaning the passage or replacing individual sensors and motors restores smooth operation. The Throttle Body facilitates consistent airflow along the Mitsubishi Lancer intake path. This is only possible with accurate plate movement and sensor feedback, which the Throttle Body provides. The result of this is a reliable combustion process.

Mitsubishi Lancer Throttle Body Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to adjust and reinstall the throttle stop screw and throttle body on 1.5 litre and 2.4 litre on Mitsubishi Lancer?
    A:
On 1.5 litre models, a factory set throttle stop screw is supplied, which is not supplied on other models. Typically, you should not have to make any adjustment to this screw. If it has been disturbed, however, first loosen the locknut and unscrew the throttle stop screw until it no longer touches the throttle lever. Now, turn the screw until it makes just contact with the lever. Turn in a further 1 ¼ turns, holding this in place tighten the locknut up securely. To remove and install, loosen the hose clamps and detach the air inlet hose, the resonator (if fitted) between the throttle body and air cleaner. For the throttle position sensor and ISC motor, disconnect the wiring. For the 2.4 litre models, disconnect the throttle control motor wiring connector. Remove the coolant and vacuum hoses from the throttle body and seal the coolant hoses to prevent dirt entry and coolant loss. Open the throttle lever manually if it is suitable then disconnect the inner Throttle Cable. To remove throttle body from the plenum chamber, undo the retaining bolts noting the direction of installation of the gasket. Discard the gasket. Remove ISC body from throttle body by unscrewing the retaining screws on all but the 2.4 litre models. Use throttle body or carburetor cleaner to clean the throttle body thoroughly, especially the throttle valve and idle passages, avoiding the ISC body to avoid damaging the wax pellet inside. Prevent the cleaner from entering the throttle shaft bearings and for 2.4 litre models also ensure the cleaner does not flow towards the throttle control motor. Operate throttle lever and check smooth working, whether it closes completely without sticking when released, lubricate throttle shaft with a small quantity of machine oil. The installation is a reversal of the removal. Ensure that the mating faces of the plenum chamber, throttle body and ISC body, are free of old gasket material. If necessary, install a new gasket and secure the ISC body to the throttle body by tightening the retaining screws. Using a new gasket in the noted position, install the throttle body to the plenum chamber and tighten the retaining bolts to the specified torque. For all models except those with a 2.4 litre engine, pull the throttle lever by hand and connect the inner throttle cable. Reconnect the vacuum and coolant hoses to the throttle body. Also, connect the wiring to the throttle position sensor and ISC motor or throttle control motor. Ensure the throttle cable and coolant level is adjusted and topped up as necessary.
